Save an Artist From Obscurity
This is the "Save an artist
from obscurity" project. The project features a variety
of obscure music for download in mp3 format. Each song will
be accompanied by a brief description of the band or artist,
any related album art and the ability to comment on that particular
song in the blog
section of this site.
Each song will be available for download
free of charge for one week. After that week
the song will be removed from the server and unavailable from
webraw.com. As with all music there is the usual copyright
mumbo-jumbo and if you feel that this project in some way
violates your rights then contact
webraw immediately.
Purpose
The purpose of this project
is to "rescue" music from complete obscurity. Most
of the tracks posted here are hard to find or out of print.
Granted, much of the music may not be worth "rescuing"
but whether it's any good or not is up to you to decide and
you can't decide if you've never heard it. Right?
The inspiration for this project was Tim
O'Reilly's article titled: Piracy
is Progressive Taxation, and Other Thoughts on the Evolution
of Online Distribution. In this article his first lesson
is that "obscurity is a far greater threat to authors
and creative artists than piracy."
Why this is not stealing
This is not stealing because
this is not music that anyone has ever heard, will hear or
would otherwise have an opportunity to hear. Some of it is
pretty bad music and never sold but other tunes have just
dropped into obscurity. This project is re-introducing these
tunes to a small audience who will at the least be familiar
with something new and at most will pull out their wallets
to try to buy more of the tunes if they can find them.
Webraw does not endorse, condone or promote
distributing copyrighted music on the Web or over peer-to-peer
networks. Every song posted on this site has been legally
purchased.
Who is featured?
Well anyone who is considered really obscure can be
featured. If you know of some band or artist that nobody else
has heard of and want them featured then contact
webraw and we'll consider it. Of course there is the bit
about owning a copy but that bridge will be crossed when it
comes up.
