What others are saying

New Kids on the Blog
The Washington Post colum that stirred up all kinds of controversy by saying that Weblogs will never replace traditional media. That colum is, in part, the inspiration for this project.

Blogs Make the Headlines
Story from Wired examining how blogs can sometimes pick up stories overlooked by traditional media and create their own news issues, a la the Trent Lott affair.

The Blog Phenomenon
Commentary by John C. Dvorak from PC Magazine. Some general background about blogs and he discusses the reasons why people blog.

Borg Journalism - We are the Blogs. Journalism will be Assimilated
From Microcontent News. Compares the collective thinking of blogs to borgs, and discusses the threat it could appear to pose to journalists. However, the piece proves that blogs are a new way to break and analyze news, and journalists would be wise to work with them.

Blogging as a Form of Journalism
From the Online Journalism Review. Discusses the nature of blogs and how they relate to traditional journalism. Part one of a series, it interviews three established journalists and gives their opinions about blogging.

Resurrecting "You've Got Blog"
Discussing the much lamented Blogging "A-List" and why much of the criticism of the "blogging elite" is just nonsense.

31 Flavors of Blogs

What is?
What is a blog? What role do blogs play on this ever-changing, ever-expanding stage we call the Web? Will blogs forever alter the way we communicate or merely fade into oblivion?

Many have speculated, pondered, commented and opined about these very questions but the definitive answers remain as elusive as ever. The purpose of this project is to step back from the rhetoric and simply let blogs speak for themselves and allow those who will listen to develop their own conclusions.

31 Flavors of Blog examines thirty-one distinctly different blogs and displays the diverse and innovative ways blogs are being used to communicate, educate and entertain. Each "flavor" provides a sampling of the incredible variety of blogs on the Web. A new blog will be featured each day during the month of March.

Think of this project as a trip to the ice cream parlor where you sample new and exciting (and sometimes disappointing) flavors all loaded onto that tiny pink plastic spoon. And after you're done sampling you can sit back and reflect on how blogs are shaping the Web or simply wipe that bit of fudge from the corner of your mouth and sample some more flavors.

Flavor 31 = Venture Capitalist Blog

VentureBlog VentureBlog

Author: Andrew Anker, David Hornik and Naval Ravikant
Blog Birthday: February 23, 2003
Location: Sillicon Valley
Organica Score: 19
Flavor Analysis: VentureBlog has only recently been made publicly available though it's been in existence for a couple of months. The site was conceived through discussions among three venture capitalists about the lack of content created by the venture community. These are the type people that helped fund the Internet boom of the late '90s.

The blog primarily sticks to "writing about the venture process, new technologies, the economy, media and life in Silicon Valley."

It's interesting to hear from those investors behind the giant dot coms we all know and love.

Flavor 30 = Real War Bloggers (Sir)

Lt. Smash LT SMASH

Author: Anonymous Soldier
Blog Birthday: January 15, 2002

Organica Score: 180
Flavor Analysis: "L.T. Smash" is the blog nickname for a reservist in the U.S. Navy who arrived in the Gulf last December. L.T. Smash's accounts range from the ordinary and the oddball to the touching. He prefers to remain anonymous for obvious reasons and his blog has achieved enormous popularity in recent months. This blog can give a real-time perspective unprecedented in a combat situation.

Flavor 29 = Political Action Blog

LMEC LMEC - In Parliament

Author: Labour Middle East Council
Blog Birthday: January 15, 2002
Location: United Kingdom
Organica Score: 39
Flavor Analysis: The Labour Middle East Council (LMEC) was established in 1969 in the wake of the Arab-Israeli war and the occupation of Arab territory. LMEC focuses most of its work in the Parliamentary Labour Party and the Labour Group in the European Parliament.

One of LMEC's principal aims is to brief Members of Parliament, in particular within the Parliamentary Labour Party, on issues of current concern with regard to the Israeli - Palestinian conflict. This blog distributes that information.

Flavor 28 = Blogvertisements

raging cow Raging Cow: Pasteurize This!

Author: Dr. Pepper and a bunch of bloggers
Blog Birthday: Sometime in early 2003
Location: Plano, TX
Organica Score: 1
Flavor Analysis: Dr. Pepper delivers a "grass roots" blog to promote a new milk product called Raging Cow. This corporate run "blogvertisement" is a sort of new experiment in "viral marketing." The premise is to recruit top bloggers, give them various incentives and ask them to blog about the product.

Doc Searls points out that it "seems ironic that a company would want to manipulate a phenomenon that’s so generally bent on exposing things. In my view blogs are the antidote to viral marketing.”

It's uncertain whether this blog has been successful but after a short read I can't say that it's going to change the way blogs are developed and maintained. Most good bloggers are passionate about something and that becomes evident in their blog. I just can't see people being passionate about Chocolate Milk. Now if Apple or Volkswagen or some similar "cultural icon" product started a similar blog it may achieve a certain level of passion.

Flavor 27 = Wikis Are Like Blogs On Steroids

wikipedia Wikipedia

Author: Ward Cunningham but anyone can be an author
Blog Birthday: January 15, 2001
Location: Portland, OR
Organica Score: 225
Flavor Analysis: No, Wikis are not blogs but they are very close cousins. Since Wikis are similar to blogs they deserve examination in this project. If you're wondering what a Wiki is the short definition explains: A Wiki is a collection of interlinked web pages, any of which can be visited and edited by anyone at any time ( collaborative software ). See Wikipedia:Overview for more info

The interesting thing about Wikis is that anyone can edit any page. It's the very definition of collaborative and the coolest thing about them is that they actually seem to work. Instead of a site of vandalized pages Wikipedia has some good information about a lot of topics.

Wikis and more specifically wikipedia, are like blogs in that they allow posts without any sort of editorial restraints. They are closer to community blogs like metafilter and slashdot than the traditional online journal. Imagine a blog where anyone can edit the posts. That's a Wiki.

queserasera Que Sera Sera

Author: Sarah Brown
Blog Birthday: October 31, 2001
Location: Tulsa, OK

Flavor 25 = CMS For Blogging "e-zines"

monoki :: monoki ::

Author: Alex Rainert and Kevin Kearney
Blog Birthday: June 01, 2001
Location: N/A
Organica Score: 26
Flavor Analysis: A sort of hybrid "e-zine" (whatever that is) that provides satiric commentary on politics, religion and just some weird crazy stuff found on the net. The site Utilizes the categorizing and archiving functionality of blog tools (specifically Movable Type) to deliver a quality publication that rivals similar non-blog powered sites. It's all about the CMS (Content Management System) and this site demonstrates that blogging tools provide content management for the masses.

Flavor 24 = Metablog for God

blog4God blogs4God - a Semi-Definitive List of Christian Blogs

Author: Kathryn Lively, Jen Kibler-McCabe, Dr. David Heddle, Rick Stilwell, Gary Petersen, Kevin Pierpont, Joshua Claybourn, Richard Hall, Dean Peters and all the people registered.
Blog Birthday: July 29, 2002
Location: Caribou Coffee shop in Rockville, MD
Organica Score: 92
Flavor Analysis: Much more than just a blog, this site provides links to "innovative, interesting and inspiring web logs under one roof." The blog works similarly to other "metablogs" like Metafilter and Slashdot. Yet it's also a clearinghouse for blogs maintained by Christians but it does not seem to necessarily mean the content has a religious theme. It features 8 categories, Apologia, Church Polity, Journals, Metablogs, Ministries, Pundits, techBlogs and Zines.

Flavor 23 = Gone Fishing Blog

Fishing Blog Andy's Fishing Blog

Author: Andrew
Blog Birthday: November 26, 2002
Location: Washington State
Organica Score: N/A
Flavor Analysis: This blog may not be the world's greatest read but it serves a purpose -- sharing fishing information with friends. Actually, this type of blog is interesting because it's really targeted to an extremely specific audience: a few fellow fishermen in the northwest United States. Not many random surfers are going to be spending a lot of time with Andy's Fishing Blog. But that's what makes it worth noticing. This is the ultimate utility blog.

Flavor 22 = Blogging Pundits

Instapundit InstaPundit.Com

Author: Glenn Reynolds
Blog Birthday: August 8, 2001
Location: Knoxville, TN
Organica Score: 250*
Flavor Analysis: Blogs are at their best when ranting about some political gripe and love him or hate him, Glenn Reynolds is the king of the pundit category. Few have reached the level of blogging success Glenn Reynolds has acquired over the past couple of years. He's even spun his success into a regular blog on MSNBC.com.

Instapundit has been credited (correctly or not) with getting Trent Lott ousted from the U.S. Senate Majority Leader position. He, and other bloggers, kept some of Lott's racially charged comments in the public awareness long enough for the "big media" to pick it up.

For better or worse, Glenn Reynolds is the Matt Drudge of Blogging.

Flavor 21 = Blogging With Disease

Living With Diabetes Living With Diabetes

Author: Kathleen Weaver

Location: Dallas, TX
Organica Score: 3
Flavor Analysis: Living With Diabetes details Kathleen's life with the disease while trying to stay in shape and live a normal life. This site hits close to home for me, since my wife and father both have diabetes. People don't understand how much the disease can affect your daily activities and how much work it takes to control. This site give a good glimpse into the daily routine of checking blood sugar, counting carbohydrates, administering insulin, and recovering from lows and highs. Through greater understanding of the disease comes a better chance for a cure.

Flavor 20 = Adult Content Blogs

WebWhore The Wandering WebWhore (Warning: Adult Content)

Author: Trixie
Blog Birthday: March 02, 2001
Location: N/A
Organica Score: 2
Flavor Analysis: This is an adult blog. While the content is definitely adult (has that been mentioned before?) the blog is mainly just the free journal part of a larger fee-based adult site run by Trixie herself. She describes herself as a "full time 'WebWhore.' Besides doing phone sex and live video conferencing fantasy shows, she built and maintains an amateur adult site and blog.

Her blog discusses everything from the war in Iraq, to her favorite fonts to Thanksgiving Dinner with family. Trixie is definitely not your stereotypical adult entertainer (she loves Bill Maher and listens to NPR) and her blog lets readers glimpse (don't all blogs?) the person behind the voice, pictures and video.

Did I mention the content was Adult? If you don't have pop-ups disabled a disclaimer even greets new visitors.

Flavor Analysis: News and reviews of the ever-confusing world of wirless gadgets. Why do we need this? Because as the site's tagline says, "You can't trust the salesman." This is another community blog that features dozens of different brands of phones and PDAs. This is a rather new blog.

Flavor 18 = Appliantology Blog

Fixitnow.com Fixitnow.com: Kicking Appliance Butt All Over the Globe!

Author: Scott M. Brown, M.S., P.E.
Blog Birthday: May 27, 2002
Location: New London, NH
Organica Score: 7
Flavor Analysis: The Samurai School of Appliantology? Yes, and it's a wonderful school. The Samurai Appliance Repair Man runs a blog that gives appliance tips, instructions, humor, news and much, much more. This site has everything. The design is a refreshing throwback to something from the mid-90s, refusing to conform to the traditional blog templates that so boringly populate much of the Web.

For a while I wasn't sure this site was a real appliance site or just some extremely clever parody but I'm now convinced that it is, in fact, genuine. It is just so infused with tongue-in-cheek humor that it can easily be mistaken for an appliance humor site (if those exist).

The really cool thing is that the information is great. This is how an appliance site should be. Not too serious but chock full of information. Scott has found an excellent way to utilize blogs in a non-traditional way and incorporate the blogging methods into his larger site.

Gizmodo Gizmodo : The Gadgets Weblog

Author: Edited by Pete Rojas, backed by Nick Denton
Blog Birthday: July 15, 2002
Location: New York, NY
Organica Score: 250*
Flavor Analysis: Gizmodo is a blog targeted at gadget freaks and never fails to satisfy by featuring the latest and greatest tech gadgets.

The site is backed by Nick Denton who plans to turn a profit by using affiliate marketing, advertising and syndication. If this blog ends up being profitable it will be one of the first complete blogs to earn a profit in the traditional way, by signing contracts and not by getting donations from benevolent visitors.

Who knows what this could mean for blogs of the future? We'll be watching.

Flavor 15 = Doctor Blogging

kill as few patients as possiblekill as few patients as possible

Author: Craig Bradley
Blog Birthday: October 9, 2002
Location: Nacogdoches, TX
Organica Score: 9
Flavor Analysis: The personal blog of a doctor who ran a private practice until recently accepting a position as in the new urgent care component of the local Emergency Room. He blogs about things such as medicine, his faith and American Idol.

There are a number of "Medical Blogs" out there but this one seems to be one of the better designed and more personal. It provides interesting insight into the medical profession as well as illuminating life through the eyes of a doctor. The blog is also a part of a larger site includes a patient blog and a recount of his efforts to adopt a little girl.

The name of the blog is also a real winner in my book. "kill as few patients as possible" is from a book of the same name by Oscar London, M.D.

Flavor 14 = Making a Restaurant Blog

Making of a Restaurant The Making of a Restaurant

Author: Sandor Weisz and Luke Seemann
Blog Birthday: February 19, 2001
Location: Chicago, IL
Organica Score: 38
Flavor Analysis: Two guys decide to start a restaurant in 5 to 10 years. Inspired by some "very good" meals in Chicago they decide to start a blog to keep track of their ideas. The blog provides the traditional elements: comments, links and personal experiences mixed with a bit of humor.

The really cool thing about a site like this is you can see the idea begin to take shape and solidify into something real and hopefully profitable. This can serve as inspiration for others who are hesitant to start their own restaurant or any other business for that matter. Will it succeed? Will it fail? Tune in to find out.

Location: Antarctica
Organica Score: 99
Flavor Analysis: Really remote blogging. Gillian Hadley ran a blog from August to November of last year recounting various adventures in the frozen tundra of Antarctica. Mainly just a lot of pictures to share with family and friends but the blog also provides an interesting look at life near the South Pole. One thing I learned is there is a lot of snow. Go figure.

Flavor Analysis: Partly an experiment to understand how blogging technology might be used in all the activities of the university, for faculty, administration, students, alumni, staff.

The site engages students and faculty at one of the world's most prestigious law schools. Flavor 10 = Regional PhotoBlogging

Author: Dawn Mikulich
Blog Birthday: February 16, 2003
Location: Chicago, IL
Organica Score: 95
Flavor Analysis: One of my favorite blogs, and yes, I'm partial because it's about my hometown. Dawn combines stunning photography of the city of Chicago with a daily blog in an unorthodox format. Instead of the typical serial blog listing days of posts, A Life Uncommon features one new photo and blog post each day.

The site won the 2003 Photobloggie Awards for Photoblog of the Year, Best Daily Photoblog, and Best Photoblog using a Lomo camera. A Life Uncommon was also a Featured Site on Wander-lust. Flavor 9 = Web Link Abuse Watchdog Blog

Don't Link To Us Don't Link to Us!

Author: David E. Sorkin
Blog Birthday: June 28, 2002
Location: Chicago, IL
Organica Score: 156
Flavor Analysis: This site was created by a law professor who mainly got sick of stupid linking policies. While the site hasn't been updated in a while the material and subject matter are still extremely relevant, especially for bloggers.

The site does a great job of describing itself: "Don't Link to Us! links to sites that attempt to impose substantial restrictions on other sites that link to them. The Linking Policy for Don't Link to Us! precludes us from requesting permission to link to a site, and compels us to link directly to the targeted page (i.e., a "deep link") rather than to a site's home page. Descriptions of sites' linking policies generally are accurate (though often not complete) at the time they are posted here but are likely to change over time. On occasion a web site will modify its linking policy in response to public ridicule. Perhaps their appearance in Don't Link to Us! will help encourage some of these sites to move forward into the 20th century ."

What is truly great about this popular blog is that there were enough bad linking policies to supply content for this blog for almost 5 full months. It brought awarness to the stupidity of corporations and the way they view the Web. And better yet, it initiated some change.

Flavor Analysis: Paul is in a wheelchair but his appropriately named blog (ChooseAbility) demonstrates that he and others like him are not "disabled" but literally choose ability.

Most of the blog posts are about people overcoming disabilities, how the media portray those with disabilities, how technology is serving (or not serving) the disabled and much more. It's a great source of information and really provides a perspective that is otherwise not traditionally seen.

In My Kitchen In My Kitchen

Author: Deb Byer

Flavor Analysis: This quote is pasted at the top of the site - "A nickel will get you on the subway, but garlic will get you a seat." -New York Yiddish Proverb. This blog shares recipes and photographs of what the recipes will look like once they've been prepared. The cool thing about this type of blog is that the interaction is about one of the most basic human desires - food.

Visitors see a recipe, try it out at home and actually taste, smell and experience what Deb experiences. Unlike FoodTV or similar corporate sites, this site has a personal, conversational appeal. If you don't like a recipe you can comment about it and maybe figure out what you did wrong.

Flavor 2 = Postcards From Prison Blog

the prison blog the prison blog

Author: David (no last name found)
Blog Birthday: December 01, 2002
Location: Somewhere in the UK
Organica Score: 1
Flavor Analysis: The blog is part of a larger site called Postcards From Prison, where you can send email postcards featuring images of prison life. The site's producers say the site "is intended to raise awareness of the uses society makes of imprisonment and punishment by using a mixture of images drawn from reality, the mass media, and fictional portrayals of prison and other forms of punishment."

The blog features news and commentary about prison issues from around the world, but much of it focuses on the UK and Europe. One post of particular interest is this one about prisoners who have created websites.

The blog doesn't focus on specific prisons or prisoners, and does not claim to take up the cause of those incarcerated. It focuses on a myriad of issues relevant to the penal system, from living conditions, prison management, prisoner demographics, and mainstream media coverage of prisons.

The blog quotes Samuel P. Huntington - "the West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Selection Criteria
Blogs selected for this project are chosen from a set of general goals rather than a strict list of specific requirments. The primary goal is to showcase the variety of blogs on the Web while also examining blogs that are serving an audience that traditional media is generally neglecting. An additional goal is to focus on unique blogs, blogs that aren't carbon copies of 1,000 other blogs on the Web. Also taken into consideration are specific achievements that some blogs have been recognized for either by traditional media or the blogging community. Finally, each blog must be at least 30 days old (or have at least 30 posts) and the latest post cannot be more than 180 days old.

This project is not definitive and there are many blogs that could have been chosen for each of the 31 Flavors. No preference was given to the selection of any specific blog. As unscientific as this project is the selection process is pretty random.

How to participate
This project is being headed up by Matt Wood and Eric Janssen but it is open to anyone who wants to participate. If you want to suggest a "flavor" to be featured contact webraw.
