My wife and I took the kids to a water park this weekend and I had time to reflect. All the years I spent trying to make the business grow I always seemed to come up against a wall. Usually a couple weeks after a function and no results I would start to question the ethics of what I was doing.

As an IBO ingrained in the system you are bombarded "AKA brainwashed" with the message that you are saving the world. And if someone does not agree with what you are doing they are either dumb or even worse a "dream stealer" When people would question the ethics of what I was doing I would revert back to the system training and try to block out the negative messages I was receiving.

I started to think about how different it would be if I built the business knowing that my ultimate goal was to get people to by into the "System" If I really didn't care about my fellow man and had no scruples on how I made money I think building a large network would be easy.

Then my wife brought up a great point. We used to here from stage that at some time to succeed in the bz you had to "flip a switch" internally per say. At the time I was taught that the switch was something to be obtained at a function, weekly meeting or listening to a CD.

In reality that switch is the point at which you really don't care about your fellow man. The IBO is essentially forced into a corner morally. You have to literally turn off your emotions to the pain you are causing to those around you. I remember a conversation with a Diamond where his exact words were " If people are in the bz for a certain amount of time and there are not core I don't give them the time of day" At that time this guy was the fastest growing guys in Quixtar, I think he was at the Ruby level.

You were told to say whatever you could to get people to the major functions because it could mean life or death financially for them. In reality is was life or death for the upline. I remember listening to phone calls by my upline where the things they said on the phone most people would consider a lie. Towards the end this really started to bother me.

So I would like to say to current IBO's that my be reading this. I know you don't like what I am saying. You may be thinking all sorts of ill things about me. But, think about your life, your family. What kind of "Christian" group would trick people into a Sunday morning worship service? I was also taught that my upline was my friend for life. Just to let you know, my upline has not talked to me since I left the BZ. Will yours?

Excellent point. I remember always being told we needed to attend all meetings and to come early and stay late as you don;t want to miss that one thing that might set your business on fire.

This is why I ask a new IBO, if they are willing to shut off their ethics, and are willing to ask anyone to give them money, regardless of that person finanical situation.

Something I heard often was that this business was simply a numbers game. Looking back on that, I realize that it's true... you have to get more people to buy into the System to replenish those that leave. A "leader" can say that they love their IBOs but in the end, they only love them as long as they continue to participate in the System.

In other words, upline "loves" their downline's money?

Good point about 'flipping the switch' ... you are right on with your theory!

I agree with the flipping of a switch theory. I never knew my friend the IBO to steal, lie or cheat. In fact her and her husband had been involved for a few years before they started acting like criminals. Surely at some point something changed for the worse with them and I am sure there are so many others out there who have flipped that switch without problems.

I don't believe these IBOs know they are doing something wrong. They are taught to justofy their actions. They think they are helping people by showing them the business.

The big justification used is "we are winning souls to Christ" God wants us to prosper....
Thats how they get folks to do anything under that banner...

My upline used to tell us we were saving people's lives, because they were financially doomed by not being in Amway.

Are Dexter Yeager and Randy Haugen and Don Wilson still best friends?
