DeVos Video Contest
By Drew in Quixtar
Looks like Dick DeVos is reaching out to the talented masses in the general population to come up with ads for his campaign. His campaign has said that they have decided to have a "Create Your Own DeVos for Governor Video Contest". An 80GB video Ipod is the prize that will be awarded to the one person who's ad gets selected. Of course there are rules and requirements in order to get your prize.
I found it a little funny that the DeVos campaign used this wording on their web page pitching the contest:
Dick DeVos knows Michigan is full of talented individuals and he wants to showcase your enthusiasm and ingenuity!
and then has this in the rules:
2. Eligibility: Residents of Michigan. Management, employees, contract employees, and families of Dick DeVos for Governor are prohibited from winning any prizes awarded by Dick DeVos for Governor.
But if you plan to get involved and do your own ad for the Governor hopeful, you had better get started quickly, the deadline according to the DeVos website is 11:59pm EST on 15 October.
Question for discussion:
What do you think is the reason DeVos for Governor came up with this idea? Is it purely just to get people involved, or is there something more?
UPDATE: The Devos for Governor website is now showing the winner and the runner-up campaign ads.
Again I love the disclaimer that is used:
"The content of these videos are the opinions of the entrants, and not necessarily the opinions of Dick DeVos for Governor."
Check them out and give your opinions.

SeeSpray is right, most people can't relate to him. And I think most folks know that his MAIN agenda really isn't 'jobs' as he would have us believe. The talk in the Metro Detroit area is that he is more concerned about advancing his right-wing conservative agenda and running for president - this is just supposed to be a stepping stone.
I for one am not a huge Granholm fan. However, I simply cannot vote for this man that I know has hurt so many people through his policies of looking the other way, and allowing the behaviour of the big pins to continue - just to advance the profits of Amway/Quixtar. Just looking at him gives me the creeps - he is a smarmy little weasel, whose inappropriate smirk is enough to make me move if he wins!
Maybe he is looking for a regular joe to help is image. Good luck pal. I sincerely hope that whatever he comes up with, it's too little too late.
Granholm has my vote.
You relly like him, Jennine :)
Guv Jen has my vote as well. While I haven't been overly impressed with her, I do understand what she inherited from Engler, and the problems of dealing with the Republican legislature. That aside, I would NEVER vote for Slick Dick.
What is ironic is that the same people that could help him out on this quest in west Michigan are the same people he fired -- the entire AV & Communications departments (corporate, not Q*, for all those that think you know so much about what goes on inside of Alticor).
He absolutely wants to be in a position to further this wife's, ummm, I mean his, fundie neocon agenda. Money to private schools they are heavily invested in, abolish a woman's right to choose, take the tax burden off of him & his friends, run more businesses out of state so they can pick them up for pennies on the dollar, etc...
The man has NEVER truely run a business. Consultants ran the place through the entire transition from Amway to Alticor -- he was a figurehead, and a damn bad one at that. He never came close to his father's charisma, only Doug. And Windquest, please! He could never relate to what the rest of us have gone through to make ends meet. I can't imagine how even his level of arrogance would allow him to think that he can have a positive impact on Detroit, or anywhere else in Michigan.
Let's see:
He recruits people (no experience required) to sell his products for him in a way that allows him to pay them little or nothing. Skip over the need for a hired professional sales force.
He then dupes these people into believing this is a good deal for them.
He gets wealthier regardless of how those people who actually sell the products fare.
Now, he wants to be Gov. so what does he do? Skip over a hired sales force to get people (unpaid amateurs, no experience necessary) to sell his candidacy.
Dupe them into thinking an iPod is adequate compensation for a campaign advertisement. (How much might that ad cost if made professionally?)
Attempt to ride that ad into a governorship, even if it is only good for himself and not for the state.
Anyone else see the parallels?
PW
SeeSpray: "Fundie neocon agenda"???
LOL!!! THAT'S IT - that's the perfect phrase I've been seeking!!!! Because I think "Ditsey" (that would be Dick and Betsy, ala "Bennifer" in Hollywood) is too conservative for WEST Michigan....the east side of the state will simply go catatonic if he's elected....LOL!!
Deb
PW,
That was a PERFECT summary of Little Dickie-Devos!
The very idea that this guy is running for governor makes me nauseous!
Everybody make their video now and submit them.
Here is a new one I found.

I hope he wins... just to see people here pissed about it, HAHA.
It's nice that you show your true colors Brad.
This is not an issue of Quixtar, or how Quixtar will influence Devos. This is so far beyond that. I'm a Michigan resident, right in the heart of Devos/VanAndel land; Grand Rapids. The issue is what Devos can do for Michigan. Frankly, I don't see that he is capable of running this state. He has absolutely no political experience, and really does not have real business experience. I'm sure if my Dad handed me the family business I could manage too. Devos is so far removed from the average Michigander that I really don't think there is anyone out there that can relate to him. If anyone watched the last debate, his solution to health care was for everyone to 'get a job'. When Granholm pointed out that Alticor hires temp employees to minimize health care costs, he denied it. I personally know people that work at Alticor, and are hired through temp agencies. They have zero healthcare benefits, and don't work regularly. Is he so disillusioned that he doesn't know what goes on at Alticor anymore? Devos' plan to supplement the income that would be lost by eliminating the small business tax is to increase income taxes. So now you and I take home less each payday so that businesses can keep more in their pocket. He also admitted that he did not have plans to unveil his full plan until elected. I don't know about you, but I want a candidate that's straightforward. Granholm isn't perfect, but at least she tries to connect with the average voter. Devos is living in a fairyland.

Anonymous, if you, or anyone else, believes that one government position, such as governer or otherwise, makes or breaks your family's future, you live in a fantasy land yourself.
Sure, pick the right guy or gal, I'm all for it. But it seems people here get all riled up on speculation and "who-done-its" it's ridiculous. And I think it would be beyond humorous that if he were to win, some people would spend more time worrying about how, or why, or that the sky will start falling tomorrow as a result, instead of realizing that in the grand scheme of things, one gubernatorial election cannot shake the resolve of citizens that actually care and are active in thier family, their community, and their government.
Yes, anonymous, I have shown you my true colors.
Brad,
I'm sure you wouldn't feel the same if Kerry had won instead of Bush. I think had Kerry won, things would be very different with the war on Iraq and possibly the turmoil in North Korea.
Speculation aside, I think you would agree that a gubernatorial election is a little less important, on a global scale, than President.
The "Republic" of America has become more of a "Federalist" system, such that the states sit nice and tight under a security blanket of Federal protection. The power a governer has for change in a state can easily be countered by concerned and well-meaning citizens.
sorry, here is the right link....

Anon,
Do you know who you are talking about?
"really does not have real business experience"
Okay, He's listed in the Forbes 500 list every year, owns Orlando Magic basketball team, also owns Peter Island, several airlines, many, many, many companies partner with him. Runs businesses in 70 different countries all over the world, and you have the guts to say he doesn't have any business experience???
I'd like to know what you are smoking, really.
Either way, whether he wins or loses, I am not sure of what impact it will have on us IBO's.
"Okay, He's listed in the Forbes 500 list every year, owns Orlando Magic basketball team, also owns Peter Island, several airlines, many, many, many companies partner with him. Runs businesses in 70 different countries all over the world..."
LOL...bussiness experience....LOL...he is because of what his father did for Q*/Scamway..."Business in 70 countries"...he influenced state trade regulations to get into other countries...China DOES NOT do Q* the same way its done in the US...Owns Peter island, airlines??? So, do anyone with enough $$$$...companies partner with him (sigh) so that they have a channel to push their products. They don't partner with Q* for nothing...its business u see...this way, the company as well as Q* can make lotsa money off IBOs...Also look up at patent infringement by Q*/Scamway...
"Either way, whether he wins or loses, I am not sure of what impact it will have on us IBO's"
If he wins, himself, his family and all the top order pins will be exempt from paying hefty taxes, he'll make sure of that (hez done that before, remember the millions of $$$ in tax break for Amway?)IBOs at the base of the pyramid...sorry guys n gals...no candies for you if he wins...
Ash,
Your comment,
"its business u see"
Is contradictory to Anon's Quote:
"really does not have real business experience"
Either he has business experience or he doesn't. Please make up your mind.
Aside from the business issues, what does he stand for? What platform is he running on? What issues does he support or is he against? Has anyone been able to answer that?
Michael,
Just so you know...when you shorten Anonymous' name, you make it look like it's ME you're discussing back & forth with.
Please use full pseudonyms. Thanks! :-)
Anon
Michael:
Check out the Devos for govenor site. If you can figure out what he is for, then you are smarter than the rest of us.
Devos is getting clobbered in the ealry polls and in the debates. IMO it is because he's been very vague and ineffective in his communication. I find this strange behavior because in 'real' business, aren't those the traits of a 'true' leader.
Maybe I just answered my own question?
DeVos stands for big business. He stands for tax breaks for the rich. His solution for those without health insurance is "get a job". He doesn't get that most companies are cutting back or eliminating health insurance, or the fact that we do live in MI where 20 years of poor decisions in management by auto companies has desecrated the job market in our state. Not only is Ford getting ready to dump 14,000 SALARY jobs along with their 30,000+/- UAW jobs, but think of the trickle effect on restaurants, suppliers, clothing stores, area businesses, etc. DeVos stands for keeping the status quo. He cannot relate to the population of MI. He has never once had to apply for a job. He has never once had to worry about a paycheck. He has never once had to wonder if he was going to work the next day, or if he had enough money for heat, medication, and food. That's not a bad thing - good for him - but don't tell me he knows what's good for the masses of this state because he hasn't a clue! He stands for advancing his right-wing political agenda, and doesn't think (and I HATE the saying - ) 'out of the box' for solutions. Want to stop abortion? Make it illegal is his solution. Want to preserve marriage? Make anything other than his beliefs illegal. Want to legislate morality? Let's make it HIS morals and be damned with everyone else's. Again - I'm not a huge fan of Jenny's, but she sure beats this guy hands down.
I'm getting off my soap box now. Y'all have a nice nite.
Imran - you can tell???
Michael,
You really perplex me!!
On another thread, you claim e-bay is not a fair marketplace. ?????
And here, you claim that being the heir to a company built by your father means you have "business experience"...?? Being on the Forbes 500 list can be accomplished by being the heir to a fortune also. You don't necessarily have to have built anything, all you need to have is the luck to have been born with a silver spoon in your mouth. When you have access to the kind of wealth that his DAD, Rich Devos had, it's easy to buy the Orlando Magic. This guy is the clown...ahem... "genuis", who ran Amway during the transition from Amway to Quixtar and takes credit for the comical "Amway IBO sponsors Quixtar IBO, Amway IBO sponsors Amway IBO, Quixtar IBO sponsors Amway IBO, Quixtar IBO sponsors Quixtar IBO, choices" debacle. Now there's a guy who's not going to give any CEO, competition for "Business Experience". Now, "Bidnez" experience? He's got it in spades ;-)....
Michael-- Aside from the business issues, what does he stand for? What platform is he running on? What issues does he support or is he against? Has anyone been able to answer that?
See, those are some sensible questions you are asking. Unfortunately, nobody can seem to figure out what he "stands for", "what platform is he running on", OR "what issues does he support or is he against"... All he does is show his creepy little grin, and odd mannerisms, and keep repeating the word "leadership"....
If anybody can save Michigan from its ailments, surely it is this clown - Rich Daddy's Little Dickie Devos...??
Anon,
So sorry sir!
Hey Michael, I'm pretty sure Anon is Ma'am.
Brad,
LOL! How can I tell? They are Anonymous!
Perceptive, you make a valid point, but please don't get me wrong, I happen to love Ebay! I just don't think it's very fair for people trying to sell things.
Please keep the thread on topic. I am not sure of what the Ebay discussion had to do with the election video's.
Hey guys-- his daddy owns the Magic, not Dickie. He was President of the club for 18-20 months if memory serves me correctly. He then resigned to pursue "other interests"
Of more interest to me is his public service record: He was appointed to 4 and 6 year terms to boards of 2 state Universities. (Grand Valley State Univ and one other, the name of which escapes me right now) He resigned both boards as he stated he could not devote adequate attention to either job. Nuff said.
You've got to watch "Dickenstein".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syNqqLILW9Q
who cares they both stink worse than ducks.
the people of michigan can't be bought.
Dicky might think so but he is wrong. I am glad he is spending millions of dollars in fighting a losing campaign.
Ummm, because he is not capible of getting his own message across, as we have all witnessed enduring his two painful debates against Gov Granholm. The guy is a clod. He has no plan for Michigan, ScamWay has screwed over thousands in Michigan, and we don't like the "I'm a business man" (oh yeh, the title was handed to me, I have never actually had to look for a real job) BS he is spewing.
Maybe if they can actually find someone who likes him, that he hasn't paid off, he could tout this person as someone voters can relate to -- because they sure can't relate to him!
