Wendy Wonder Dog

By QBlog in

There's no Reader Mail today. Instead, I'll share a story with you that is both true and heartwarming. It's a story of courage and triumph. It's a story about Wendy, my wife's Basset Hound.

Yesterday was Sunday and grandma offered to watch the kiddos after church so that the wife and I could go watch a movie or something. We saw Sideways which was good but didn't quite live up to the hype.

After the movie we gathered up the children (and Valentine's candy) and returned home for dinner. Wendy, who generally stays in the backyard when we're away from home, was very excited to see us. She bounded into the house, tail wagging and ready to play.

She seemed a little muddy but it rained the night before so mud was to be expected. Then the phone rang. It was our neighbor Chris(tine). She chatted with my wife who started saying things like, "No way. Oh my goodness. What a wonderful dog."

Here's what happened, according to Chris. While we were away from home, a "purse snatcher" did what purse snatchers do best. I'm not sure how he got the purse. Did he snatch it from the old lady walking her dog? Did he get it from an unlocked car? Did he break into a house? No idea. But he was described as a purse snatcher.

The police were called but couldn't find him. They began searching the neighborhood and asked residents to keep their eyes open. Just then, in our backyard, Wendy started barking like a... uh... dog. Basset Hounds have a very deep, hound-dog bark and everyone heard her.

Suddenly a man bolted out of our backyard, leaving the gate open. He was carrying a large, black purse. Wendy darted behind him, barking and running with her short Basset Hound legs. You guessed it, the purse snatcher jumped in our backyard to evade capture and Wendy decided to take care of business.

Our neighbor was watching this happen from across the street and she said Wendy chased the man to a house and cornered him until the police got there moments later. The purse snatcher is now in custody and the purse was returned to its owner.

Our dog is a hero. This two-year-old Basset Hound, who is afraid of our declawed cat, chased down a crook and saved the day! We gave her lots of dog treats last night and extra loving. Wendy the Wonder Dog!

As Mayor McCheese, I give Wendy the Wonder Dog the key to the city.

Huzzah!

Good dog!!!

(Here's hoping that she got a bunch of dogbones...)

She sounds just like Flash from the Dukes of Hazzard. Flash never barked at anybody except the bad guys on the show.

Way to go Wendy!

I'm glad you guys weren't home when that creep was hiding out in your back yard. It's always easier to hear these stories after it's all over and we know no one (including the dog) got hurt.

That's one helluva dog!

(I like cats, but just once I'd like to hear a story of a crook being chased down by someone's cat. It doesn't seem to happen. This is one skill dogs seem to have mastered.)

Aw... what a beauty! She's adorable! Such a sweetie!

I'm with PW.. I'm glad you weren't home when that dork jumpped your fence.

Wendy is a cutie......
I agree completely about Sideways......

PW: cats freeze you with their icy stares... and mezmerize you into forgetfulness.

I'm convinced cats DO stop criminals. The evil doers just don't remember it afterwards. They are still under the spell...

Qblog: what a neat story! I, too, am glad you were not around at the time. Lord knows what might have happened. Glad your family - and Wendy - are all OK.

Cats ARE evil. But they do keep the unwanted IBOs away......

You guys have really hurt my feline feelings here. Cats are really cool pets - so are dogs. Just depends whether you like soft gentle purring or someone slobbering all over you! Now I know why guys prefer dogs & ladies prefer kitties!!

Good girl Wendy!

I'm a guy, and I prefer cats. Dogs like wendy are GREAT for the heroic work, but inside the house, cats.

I love my cats because of their evil-ness and grumpiness.

One word: posture.

I like 'em all - Cats & Dogs. I had dogs from little on up until I was 28. Then I got my first cat - or rather - he got his new human sucker. :-)

I have always liked cats just never had them in my home. Now I am a convert. I will also get a dog - again - in the near future. Hope the cats can tolerate the dog, because they will have no choice.

Just like they have no choice when I give them a bath.

A clean cat is a happy........... WAIT!! What am I thinking..........????

A clean cat is a severely pissed off kitty. :-)

Oh well, it is my way of making sure they are adaptable to water.

Imran, you are so right.

A cat can out posture even the best Multi-Zirconium, Crown Amblabbermouth, IBO.

Just remember to think adoption first! Whether you want a new kitty or doggy, old or young....the best pets are those someone didn't want. They will be your friends forever! I volunteer for Affection Connection - an adoption agency in my area.

What - volunteer? Waste time not building a Quixtar business? Yup. Makes me happy too, to see a little animal get a new home. Both adopter & adoptee!! Much more fulfilling than signing up a new IBO & spending the weekend listening to some egotistical smarmy wannabe tell me I should devote my entire existence to a business that has little if any chance of success. Anyway. I'm much happier now.

I'm a dog person, but please don't tell my cat that!

Actually, I like both cats and dogs and have one each. The cat has a great, but a touch neurotic personality. Good for laughs and the occasional purr. The dog is a better companion, and also our security system. He's a 95+ pound rottweiler mix and while he's the sweetest animal you will ever meet, he does bark at anyone he doesn't know coming near the house, which is why we've seen solicitors and mailmen throwing things at our front door and run away very quickly.

I have a dog and 3 cats....I am convinced that if I dropped dead today in my livingroom, the dog would lay down next to my body and guard it until, eventually, she starved to death. The cats, on the other hand, would clean out my bank account, drive my car, and run up my charge cards before I had assumed room temperature.

I've never been a cat person, but I prefer medium to large dogs. I consider the little tiny ankle-biter dogs in the same catagory as most cats. Nice for looks and companionship (sometimes) but a big dog out playing with my daughter is protective of her in my absence.

Way-to-go Wendy.... all she needs now is a cape!

Hey, let's cut the purse snatcher a little bit of slack here. The poor guy probably needed the money to pay for the next quixtar go-away function, lest his upline start yelling at him!
