Welcome to the future Memphis!
Living in Memphis, or similar technologically
deficient cities, presents a unique set of challenges for
those seeking to enjoy the modern amenities people in progressive
urban areas take for granted. Wireless Internet access in
public places is one of those modern conveniences that continues
to elude Memphians. Finding the rare hotel, restaurant or
coffee shop with wireless access often involves a lot of sweat
and patience. Talking with friends, Internet searches, war
driving and phone calls are just some of the methods wireless
seekers employ while trying to find that digital Holy Grail
- Free Public WiFi.
This series features WiFi spots
in Memphis as they are found and while it's not a review of
the location, it will provide details about the spot for you
to determine if it is worth visiting.
Cafe Francisco
This
is an actual Cafe that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
It serves a variety of beverages including coffee, beer and
Italian sodas. The cafe is located in the Pinch District and
brings a wonderful atmosphere to the area.
At the back of the cafe is a collection
of antiques for sale as well as the coffee roaster and additional
dining space. The cafe has high ceilings and includes a stock
ticker for the portfolio obsessed.
When I entered the cafe for the first
time I was immediately impressed. The atmosphere, the friendly
staff and good coffee were almost overwhelming. There is nothing
in Memphis that compares to Cafe Francisco. Throw in free
WiFi and you've got a potent combination that will hopefully
be duplicated throughout the area.
A
recent article in The
Commercial Appeal describes how co-owner Julie Ray decided
to begin offering WiFi access.
"The wireless was a gift
from one of the scientists at St. Jude who . . . wanted
to share the wireless joy," Ray said. "Internet
cafe is not our main goal. It was just a service my customers
wanted, and we were able to fulfill with minimal trouble."
If you haven't visited Cafe Francisco you
must put it at the top of your to-do list. And don't forget
to bring your laptop.
